Claudius, the 4th emperor of the Roman Empire only liked women. And it was weird. He was supposed to be homosexual.
For an upper-class Roman, Claudius’ love life was very much unusual. He was the only one of the first 15 emperors to not like men or boys. He only took women as his lovers. Not boys, not men.
Warning: this post contains stuff suitable only for aged 18 and above (yeah right) as it contains sexual terms and depiction…that may be too graphic for younger audience.
Homosexuality was common during their time, it was common for men to like other men, and, well, boys. In fact, it’s not only the Romans, but also Spartans. They only engaged in heterosexual sex for reproduction purposes.
Sexuality during their time was seen as either of the two: to dominate or to submit. To dominate means to be the one who penetrates. You get the idea, without being too graphic.
It is a very shameful act to submit, and it was actually illegal for the elite families of ancient Rome (Patricians) to assume a submissive role.
Women were considered inferior because they do not posses the tool to penetrate, by default giving them all the submissive role. For the women, giving signs of enjoying sex was shameful, which could lead to divorce.
Homosexuality was a thing, and because of it the Cult of Bacchus was basically wiped out because it has an initiation rite where the initiates were required to be penetrated, giving a huge blow to ancient Roman morality.
Ancient Roman bathhouses were kind of a place where people can find sexual partners. The elite took bath with boys. And it was normal.
When it comes to oral sex, it was considered as a more shameful act for men to do the work on another man, for it suggests being “owned” by the man. Being penetrated on the posterior was shameful enough, and it was more of a shame for the mouth.
I hope this wasn’t too graphic for your taste! You see, sexuality was a big issue then…if you lived to be a heterosexual male, but not so much if you’re homosexual. It is still the case now, although people are becoming more open about many things.
Have a great day!
